Surface (originally titled Fathom) is a science fiction television series that premiered on NBC on 19 September 2005. The program aired fifteen episodes before going on hiatus on February 6, 2006 due to NBC's coverage of the 2006 Winter Olympics. On May 15, 2006, NBC officially announced the series' cancellation, leaving the outcome of the show's plot unresolved.

Opening:

During a routine submersible dive in the North Pacific Ocean, California oceanographer Laura Daughtery (Lake Bell) is attacked by an unknown life form that appears out of a field of craters on the ocean's floor. Miles Barnett (Carter Jenkins), a North Carolina teenager, finds himself face to face with the strange sea creature after falling off his wakeboard during a nighttime outing with his friends. Meanwhile, Richard Connelly (Jay R. Ferguson), a Louisiana man on a fishing trip, loses his brother in a suspicious diving accident when a creature drags him to the depths of the Gulf of Mexico.

All around the world, strange things are occurring in the world's oceans. Shooting stars fall from the night sky into the Caribbean Sea; a horrific howl tears apart a South African lighthouse. In South Carolina, an unknown carcass washes up on a public beach, prompting the government to evacuate and cordon off the area, claiming it as a beached whale killed by red tide poisoning......

Surface: een spannende onderzees avontuur wordt nieuw leven onder de zeespiegel ontdekt. Op verschillende plaatsen in de wereld wordt een vreemd verschijnsel onder water waargenomen. De Amerikaanse regering doet er echter alles aan om de ontdekking van dit mogelijk levensgevaarlijke wezen stil te houden. Laura, een nieuwsgierige oceanografe, gaat op onderzoek uit.

Tijdens een onderzoek met een onderzeeboot in de Atlantische Oceaan wordt oceanografe Laura Daughtery aangevallen door een sinister beest. Tiener Miles Barnett komt oog in oog te staan met een vreemd wezen, als hij tijdens een nachtelijk avontuur met vrienden van zijn wakeboard valt voor de kust van North Carolina. De broer van Richard Connelly wordt tijdens een vistrip door een onbekende kracht naar de dieptes van de Golf van Mexico getrokken.

Bizarre verschijnselen:
Op verschillende plaatsen in de wereld worden in zee bizarre verschijnselen waargenomen. Wetenschapper Aleksander Cirko is in dienst van de regering en doet er alles aan om geen ruchtbaarheid te geven aan deze waarnemingen. Oceanografe Laura Daughtery, een alleenstaande moeder uit Californië, vertouwt het niet en gaat met ooggetuige Richard Connelly op onderzoek uit, om erachter te komen of er een monster in zee schuilt, dat de mensheid in gevaar kan brengen. De ontmoeting met het schepsel laat ook tiener Miles Barnett niet los en alle vier de personages merken dat de verschijning hun leven steeds meer gaat beïnvloeden.
