The Visitor

The Visitor was a science fiction television series created by Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin which aired on Fox from 1997–1998. It starred John Corbett as Adam McArthur who was abducted by extraterrestrials 50 years earlier and escapes back to Earth to help improve life for humanity.

Fifty years prior to the outset of the show Adam MacArthur is abducted by aliens in the Bermuda Triangle during World War II. Upon his escape and subsequent return to Earth, he finds that not only is he still the young man he was 50 years before, but he also has special powers. During his abduction, aliens managed to tap into a largely unused portion of his brain which left Adam with the power to heal and bring people back to life. He also acquired a number of other strange abilities.

In the series, he claims that all people have the power to do this but simply don't know how. Most episodes see Adam travelling America and making the lives of people better by using both his deductive reasoning and his special powers. He's driven by what he feels to be a quest to change the lives of strangers.

A Colonel from the U.S. Army, James Vise, is concerned about Adam's presence on Earth. He spends most episodes attempting to capture what he perceives to be a threat to U.S. security. FBI agents Wilcox, Larue and Van Patten are also after Adam; however, they don't see him as a threat, but rather want to question him about his disappearance. They often clash with Vise's group. Adam is also being chased by otherworldly forces. Apparently, the aliens abducted a few humans as part of an experiment; Adam being one of them. Since Adam's escape back to Earth, the aliens are attempting to track him down in order to resume their tests.

In the end, Adam convinces his "abductors" that he has a mission to complete on Earth and thus is given the opportunity to save mankind. Vise, who was killed during his struggle capturing Adam, is revived by the one who he saw as a threat and is saved by him. Adam convinces him to find another purpose in his second chance in life. However, the ending is somewhat open because after Vise's "death", new questions rise. In addition, FBI agents Wilcox, Larue and Van Patten are reassigned (or forced to resign) after the trio's encounter with Adam and Vise.

As a show where the main character is travelling to different locations in each episode, the show doesn't feature a large cast of primary characters. Similarly to shows like The X-Files, most episodes feature a supporting cast that appears for just a single scene.

Unfortunately The Visitor has never been released on DVD, at least not in Europe or North America.

The Visitor is een SF serie gemaakt door Roland Emmerich en Dean Devlin die werd uitgezonden op FOX in het TV seizoen 1997-1998. John Corbett speelde de hoofdrol, een karakter genaamd Adam McArthur die 50 jaar eerder door buitenaardsen was ontvoerd en ontsnapt terug naar de Aarde om het leven van de mens te verbeteren.

50 jaar voor de tv serie wordt Adam ontvoerd door buitenaardsen in de Bermuda Triangle tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Terwijl die ontsnapt naar de Aarde komt hij erachter dat hij niet ouder is geworden dan de man hij 50 jaar eerder was en dat hij daarbij ook speciale krachten heeft. Tijdens zijn ontvoering hebben de buitenaardsen zich vooral gefocust op het deel van hersenen wat zowat niet gebruikt wordt en wat Adam de heeft gegeven om mensen te genezen en zelf mensen terug te laten komen van de dood. Daarnaast heeft hij nog andere speciale krachten.

Hij beweert dat alle mensen deze krachten hebben maar dat ze niet weten hoe ze deze krachten moeten oproepen. In de meeste afleveringen zien we Adam Amerika doorkruisen en daarbij mensen te helpen hun leven beter te maken door middel van zijn speciale krachten. Hij is gedreven het leven te beteren van onbekende mensen.

Colonel James Vise is bezorgd door de aanwezigheid van Adam op Aarde, hij probeert Adam dan ook alleen maar te vangen omdat hij ervan overtuigd is dat Adam een bedreiging is voor de USA. FBI agenten Wilcox, Larue en Van Patten zitten ook achter hem aan alleen zien ze niet als een bedreiging maar zijn ze meer geïnteresseerd naar zijn verdwijning 50 jaar eerder.

Zij raken geregeld met Vise in de clinch. Daarbij wordt Adam ook nog door buitenaardse wezens achterna gezeten. Blijkbaar hebben deze buitenaardse wezens een aantal mensen ontvoerd, waaronder Adam. Sinds zijn ontsnapping proberen ze hem weer terug te halen zodat ze verder kunnen gaan met het experimenteren op hem.

Aan het einde weet Adam zijn ontvoerders ervan te overtuigen dat hij zijn missie op Aarde moet afmaken en dat is de mensheid te redden. Vise wordt gedood tijdens een gevecht met Adam en wordt vervolgens weer door Adam zelf tot leven gebracht. Adam overtuigt hem een ander doel in zijn leven te vinden. Het is uiteindelijk een beetje een open einde omdat na Vise’s dood er weer nieuwe vragen opdoemen. De FBI agenten krijgen vervolgens andere zaken toegewezen na hun clash met Vise en Adam.

De serie is helaas nooit op DVD uitgebracht, in ieder geval niet in Europa en ook niet in Noord Amerika.
